About Us

The House of Refuge was established in 1995 by Pastor Alfred Johnson. He has been the driving force behind the organization, which has benefited greatly from his vision, drive and determination.

We are a Christ-centered residential ministry primarily helping African-American men overcome their life-controlling addictions so they can successfully re-enter society as productive citizens. We now operate three separate facilities with a total capacity to serve 24 men.

The House of Refuge seeks to create a catalytic movement among Chattanooga area agencies and churches such that every Chattanooga area man who gets out of prison, regardless of race, is reconnecting with and supporting his family, free of former destructive cycles.

Our program lasts a minimum of one-year in residence. It fosters a climate to overcome controlling addictions. Most of our candidates come directly from the local prison population. We work through the local courts advocating alternative, Christ-centered, sentencing as opposed to jail time in the Department of Corrections.

The residents are all in various stages of our program. Some of the residents are employed, some are actively seeking employment and some are receiving job training. Around 90% of the men who graduate from the yearlong program find jobs within a month after enrolling. All of them are regular participants in our bible studies as well.

We also own and operate several full-size vans, which we use to transport our clients to work, dental, medical and parole appointments.

Funding

We rely primarily on charitable donations from churches, foundations and individuals. Currently, we receive no government funding. Without the kindness and generosity from our partners, we would not be able to continue to serve our clients.
