Who Are We?

Our History.

The House of Refuge, a non-profit organization, was established in 1995 by Pastor Alfred Johnson with the aim of providing shelter, support, and resources to those in need within the community.

Pastor Johnson's unwavering vision, relentless drive, and unyielding determination have been the cornerstone of the organization's success and its positive impact on the lives of many individuals. Through his leadership, the House of Refuge has continued to expand its services and reach, making a meaningful difference in the community.

We are a faith-based residential ministry dedicated to assisting African American men in overcoming life-controlling addictions, enabling them to reintegrate into society as productive members. Presently, we operate three distinct facilities with a combined capacity to accommodate 24 men.

The House of Refuge endeavors to initiate a pervasive initiative among Chattanooga area agencies and churches, promoting successful reentry for all local men leaving prison, irrespective of race, by facilitating familial reconnection and liberation from prior destructive cycles. Our residential program spans a minimum duration of six-months to a maximum of one year, creating an environment conducive to overcoming life-controlling addictions. The majority of our candidates are sourced directly from the local prison population. We engage with local courts, advocating for alternative, Christ-centered sentencing in lieu of imprisonment within the Department of Corrections.

Our residents are at diversified stages within our program. Some are employed, others are actively pursuing employment, and several are undergoing job training. Approximately 90% of program graduates secure employment within a month of completion. All participants actively partake in our bible studies. Additionally, we possess and operate several full-size vans to transport our clients to work, as well as dental, medical, and parole appointments.
